From A to ANHH
ANHH's values and dedication to doing good are the legacy of the professional and personal experiences of our Managing Director, Andrew Heywood Hughes.

INSPIREDI contracted Guillain-Barre Syndrome in 1984, was paralysed from the neck down, and was dependent on a wheelchair for several years. It's a gift to have experienced something that has driven the rest of my life. | ACTIVISTI was part of the small working group that produced the UK's response to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. My experiences in healthcare and as a disabled person have sparked a lifelong commitment to fairness and rights for all. | ADVOCATEI was honoured to be chosen as the patient representative for the redevelopment of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital - the place that saved my life. I learned more about the good and bad side of life in 7 months at GOSH than I have learned in the decades since. |

SPEAKERMy experiences drive my commitment to call our injustice and make a difference. The National Children's Bureau was the first to give me a voice, allowing me to speak truth to power without fear at various conferences. | VIOLINISTMusic has always been massively important to me. I played in multiple orchestras in the UK and, unforgettably, with an Anglo German Youth Orchestra. It brought discipline, teamwork, achievement, and social interaction. | PHILOMATHI have a Bachelor's in Mediaeval and Modern History (although I spent most of my time in London playing the violin!) and a Master's in Healthcare Policy and Management. I still take joy in learning everyday. |
GUIDEA historian's dream summer job, tour guiding for multiple years in the State Rooms at Warwick Castle. I learned how to hold an audience, and how to vary content to engage different perspectives and interests. | FOLLOWERI am inspired by one of this country's greatest inventions and was always going to find my home in the NHS. I was an Executive Director in acute, specialist, and mental health trusts, and sat on the Board of a GP Federation. We stand on the shoulders of giants. | TRAILBLAZERI led the project team that planned and delivered the award-winning move of Birmingham Children's Hospital across the city, the first live move of a still operational hospital in the UK. We created the blueprint for a method that is now employed worldwide. |
PLANNERI was Editor and Principal Author of the approved Outline Business Case for the Birmingham New Hospitals Project. The £585m new buildings are a partnership between the NHS, the University of Birmingham, and the Ministry of Defence. | COLLABORATORI was a Council Member of Birmingham Chamber - the biggest in the country. I furthered my involvement with our second city on Common Purpose, gaining fascinating insights into its rich economic and cultural life. | FUNDRAISERI have held executive responsibility for planning, strategy, performance management, estates, media management, communications, and fundraising. Leading fundraising brought me into contact with amazing children, families, staff, and partners. |
SUPPORTERThe Children's Hospital's fundraising success boosted our typical donated income from £3m a year to £43.2m in one year - the most successful in the hospital's history. New buildings appeared. | PROJECT DIRECTORI was Project Director for the £22m new Burn Centre in Birmingham. I led the project through the collapse of the initial construction partner and subsequent legal action, delivering to time, scope, and cost parameters. | INFLUENCERI championed the concept of a Children's and Young People's Quarter as part of Birmingham's masterplan. I am pleased that the city with Europe's youngest population is now delivering on the idea. |
AWARD WINNERPositive Practice in Mental Health and Social Care (2017), Design in Mental Health Project Team of the Year (2014), International Green Award for Innovation in Design (2014), Building Better Healthcare Best Interior Design (2010), BBH Best Sustainable Estates Strategy (2009), Premises and Facilities Management Move of the Year (1998), NHS Estates Project Team of the Year (1995). | CLINICAL TUTORBetween 2006 and 2014, I was on the teaching staff at Warwick Medical School. I taught non-clinical core skills to trainee doctors, new consultants, and experienced medical leaders on the Master's in Medical Leadership. | EDUCATORThrough Warwick, I was asked to lecture on international healthcare management and finance in Hong Kong. A fascinating insight into hierarchical professional structures and the challenges of didactic teaching. |
MENTORBetween 2007 and 2019, I taught on the International Master's Degree at the Faculty of Design, Technology and Environment. My specialisms were estate rationalisation, property management, programme management and the healing environment. | SENIOR INDEPENDENT DIRECTORFrom 2013 to 2016, I was a Non-Executive Director and then SID at Burton Hospitals. I chaired the People Committee and STRIDE LLP (a Joint Venture Development Company), and was a member of the Finance, Audit and Risk Committees. | INNOVATORI produced an approved Commercial Strategy to introduce new, non-traditional sources of income into the University Hospitals of Leicester. I co-ordinated activities with the City Council, Academic Health Sciences Network, two Universities, and the independent sector. |
PATRONI am honoured to be Patron of Teenage Cancer Trust, having served on the Board for 10 years. I was the Safeguarding Trustee and Chair of the Risk Committee. | CHAIRSince 2016, I have been Independent Chair of the network across the West and East Midlands and East Cheshire. PiP brings together health and social care providers to improve access to and the quality of children's services. | CONSULTANTMeant was my first consultancy. Please see the legacy video below. We were programme management and estates specialists, linking asset utilisation to clinical need and commercial advantage. |
LEADERAs Project Director for the modernisation of mental health services across Shropshire, I led the development of the £50m Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury. The new build mental health hospital was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget. | CHANGE AGENTThe Redwoods Centre replaced Shelton Hospital, the last remaining operational Victorian "lunatic asylum" in the country. Acting for the Trust, I negotiated the sale of surplus land and buildings at above market value. | PROBLEM SOLVERAs responsible Executive Director, I oversaw the transfer to a new PFI provider of hard and soft facilities management services, following the collapse of Carillion in 2018. |
IMPROVEMENT EXPERTI have sat on Boards facing the impact of regulatory powers. Now, we work with clients to help them with Regulators such as the CQC and Charity Commission. | GOVERNANCE EXPERTI was Change Director at GGI, providing specialist consultancy advice to the NHS and third sector. My rare insight as executive and non-executive director across sectors is central to my credibility and knowledge. | COMPLETERThe hospice movement is precious to ANHH, both personally and professionally. Sindy and I first met when I was Executive Chair at the Donna Louise in Stoke and, together, we oversaw its merger and winding up. |
FOUNDERI established ANHH in 2020 as a values-driven consultancy specialising in governance. The words of my first strapline remain central to our ethos as the team and service portfolio have grown. | CONTRIBUTORANHH is registered at Keele University, based at the Business School. We are currently writing a chapter for a book on "corporate dishonesty", edited by the Law School. | PATHFINDERANHH is proud to be based in Staffordshire, but our influence and reach is national. We are effective remotely or face-to-face. You just tell us where and when and we'll get there. |
WRITERWe all have our quirks, some of us more than others! I collect fountain pens because I love to write. All we want from our leaders is that they have informed opinions. | PARTNEROur list of clients is growing all the time, and I am personally involved in every project. Our ethos is one of real partnership not that of "typical" management consultants. | ADVISORANHH's practice is informed by real "been there, done that" experience. No two situations are the same, but they're often alike with learning to share. Success breeds success. |
MEIn case you hadn't realised, ANHH is me - Andrew Nicholas Heywood Hughes. Everything we do - and how we do it - reflects the name on the tin and the buck stops here. |
